Become an Apprentice

Interested in becoming an electrical apprentice with the Flint/Saginaw Electrical JATC?  The 1st step to becoming an apprentice is to be accepted into the program.  The following tasks need to be completed in order to get started.  Good luck!  And remember, if you have any questions about the process or the program, please feel free to contact us.

1.  Complete one of our applications and return it to us (within 30 days of receipt).  Along with the application, you will need to provide the following.

  • Official birth certificate
  • Must be 18 at the time of DOL registration
  • Official high school diploma, College diploma, or GED at time of DOL registration
  • Must be able to provide an official Transcript with 2 semesters of High School Algebra, or 1 semester of 100 level or College Algebra with a 2.0 or “C”
  • Valid Driver’s License or Valid State Identification Card or Voter’s Registration Card

*Applicants under 18 or still enrolled in school are still eligible to apply, test, and interview. These applicants will not be issued a training assignment until proof of minimum age and high school, or GED completion has been received.

The Flint/Saginaw Electrical JATC will make copies of your official documents when you bring them to our office, and we will return them to you at that time.  There is a $25.00 processing fee for the application. We accept cash, checks or money orders.

2.  Aptitude test.   Once the application is completed, all required documents have been provided to us and the applicant has met all qualifications, they will be notified by mail to take an aptitude test.  The scheduling of aptitude testing takes place when the Flint/Saginaw Electrical JATC receives a sufficient number of applications.  This could take as little as 1 month or as long as 1 year to schedule.  The test consists of basic Algebra and English comprehension and is a 3-hour test.

3.  Oral interview with the committee.  Once the applicant passes the aptitude test, they will then be placed on a list to orally interview with the FSEJATC.  The interview will be approximately 15 minutes long.  Applicants will once again be notified by mail of the date and time they have been scheduled for an interview.

Once steps 1 and 2 have been completed, the applicant will be placed on an eligibility list for the apprenticeship program.  The FSEJATC will contact the qualified applicants from the list to inform them of when the next program will start.  Programs start once a year. Therefore, depending on how many qualified applicants the FSEJATC has received, you may remain on the list for approximately 3 months to 2 years before being notified.

All applicants selected by the FSEJATC for admission to the apprenticeship program are required to submit to a urine drug test provided at the committees' expense.  Any individual that refuses to take the drug test or tests “positive” will not be allowed to continue in the apprenticeship program
